What is Mentalism
Mentalism is a practice which involves an individual, the mentalist, to appear to have highly developed mental or intuitive abilities. As a matter of fact, many believe these mentalists to have some sort of “mind reading” capability. This is because they are able to point out what their audience is thinking. A major factor in this art is that the viewers actually believe you are doing something real, and if done correctly, they will believe you have “special powers” unlike magic, in where you are perceived as a trickster. Performances of mentalism may appear to include feats of hypnosis, telepathy, clairvoyance, divination, precognition, psychokinesis, mediumship, mind control, memory feats and rapid mathematics. Most mentalists are categorized to be psychic entertainers. However, this category also have performers who are non-mentalists like bizarrists and psychic readers.
How Do Mentalists Present Themselves?
Well it really depends on the mentalists themselves. The more traditional mentalism performers like Dunninger present themselves as “mind readers” or “psychics”. This makes their audience believe they have supernatural abilities. Newer mentalists including Banachek and Derren Brown take the opposite approach and say that they have natural skill in mentalism. Therfore, they are good at reading the body language of their audience and using psychological suggestion to manipulate the minds of their viewers. Some other mentalists like Chan Canasta and David Berglas decide not to reveal their secrets, and simply leave it up to the audience to decide.
New mentalists are taking their presentations to the streets and performing on random people on the streets. This unexpectedness of the civilians makes it easier to perform on them. David Brown likes this approach, but clearly states beforehand that everything he does is an illusion and he isn’t actually reading their minds. This has also caused a lot of controversy among mentalists as many want their talents to appear real. However, others do not want to cheat their spectators by lying to them.
types of mentalism
Performances of mentalism may appear to include feats of hypnosis, telepathy, clairvoyance, divination, precognition, psychokinesis, mediumship, mind control, memory feats and rapid mathematics. The type which is mainly used by mentalists is “psychic” ability, in which the mentalist can accurately guess what the spectators are thinking.
Mentalism vs Magic
While many may believe that mentalism is just a type of magic, many people beg to differ. Magic as you know is largely based off of trickery, and sleight-of-hands. In a magic trick, the spectators usually know that it is a “trick”, thus the name magic trick. Although they may not know how it was done, the spectators are almost always convinced that it was merely a trick. The magicians also promote this idea, and usually always show the magic as fun, and do not say that it is real. Mentalism on the other hand, is traditionally know for being portrayed as real. The spectators usually believe that the mentalist can read their minds and so has “psychic: abilities. It is only nowadays that many Mentalists like Derren Brown openly state that their acts are merely illusions and that they are not actually reading their minds.
A recent mentalism presentation was shown in Britain’s Got Talent that raised many eyebrows on how it was done. The mentalist Aaron Crow uses his great acting skills to appear awkward or un-normal to the audience which adds to the idea that maybe he is different, and indeed has “psychic” abilities. Check out this video of a presentation of Aaron Crow on the stage of Britain’s Got Talent.
So Is Mentalism Real?
A majority of mentalism is exactly what the word sounds like, mental plays. Mentalism doesn’t involve mastering sleight-of-hands, it doesn’t require any trickery, all a good mentalist needs is to understand the spectators. For the most part, mentalism is just a lot of studying of behaviour and applying your own style to it. Although many mentalists want their art to be considered real, many mentalists like Derren Brown openly admit to playing mind games, and not actually reading minds.
A fun portrayal of a mentalist can be seen in the movie “Now You See Me,” in which Merritt McKinney, played by Woody Harrelson, performs as a mentalist. Watch a clip of it here:
